Letter from the Director

Dear Parents,

Thank you for inquiring about Crestmoor Montessori Care. Searching for the right care for your child is quite an important undertaking. I hope that I am able to help and serve you through this process.

This is Crestmoor Montessori Care’s sixth year of operation. Although new in existence, I have been teaching toddlers, pre-schoolers, and kindergarteners in a Montessori curriculum for thirty-two years. I am Lucia Madlambayan, Ms. Lucille to most parents and students. The Crestmoor Montessori Care mission is to provide the children a Montessori curriculum in a home away from home environment. The basis of the Montessori method in a classroom is mixed age groups (infants to 6 years of age), free choice of work, “which is one of the highest of all the mental processes,” (Dr. Maria Montessori) and uninterrupted concentration. As a Montessori teacher, my job is to observe, support, and foster the natural development of your child because once you “free the child’s potential …you will transform him (/her) into the world.”(Dr. Maria Montessori)

To visit us, please make an appointment by calling us at (650) 873-5837 or send an e-mail to CrestmoorMontessori@yahoo.com. Thank you for your interest and I hope to hear from you soon.

Respectfully yours,

Lucille Madlambayan, M.S.

CURRICULUM

Practical Life

Practical Life is divided into two categories: care of person and care of the environment. The care of person teaches the child to care for himself/herself. Montessori jobs help and guide the child to accomplish the goals of cleanliness, to take care of oneself, and to be independent in daily life chores. Practical Life exercises enhance the child’s hand-eye coordination, fine motor skills, social graces, and focus of attention.

The care of the environment teaches the child to clean after himself/herself. The child will learn order and discipline in caring for the things around him/her. It develops control of oneself, thus being aware of other’s needs around them.

Sensorial

The Sensorial areas include: the sense of touch, the sense of smell, the sense hearing, the sense of sight, and the sense of taste. Dr. Maria Montessori said, “there is nothing in the mind that never passes the senses.” The sense of touch utilizes tactile materials to sensitize the fingertips to become aware of the difference between rough and smooth objects. The sense of smell teaches them to distinguish the good smell from the bad smell, like perfumes that smell good or rotten foods that smell bad. The sense of hearing will help them to decipher degrees of sound, from the softest to the loudest. The sense of sight makes them aware of the brightest to the darkest. The sense of taste makes them realize that there is sweet, bitter, sour, and salty in the different kinds of foods they taste. Our Montessori classroom is fully equipped as a prepared environment for the children to have a complete experience.

Mathematics

The Montessori math area has materials that help and teach the child to learn and recognize numbers both in quantities and symbols. They will learn to recognize numbers from 0 -100 with the counters, teen boards, and ten boards. They will learn odd and even numbers, greater than and less than symbols, and the hierarchy of numbers, specifically unit, tens, hundreds, and thousands. They will learn addition, subtraction, and fractions. All these materials are available for them to explore in the prepared environment.

Cultural Arts

The cultural arts area is comprised of: botany, zoology, and geography. In botany, the parts of the trees and leaves are presented alongside the different shapes of leaves. The child will also learn the different habitats of plants and animals.

In zoology, the child is familiarized with vertebrates and invertebrates. The mammals, reptiles, birds, and amphibians are also introduced.

In geography, the children will learn the map of the world, the seven continents, and the land forms that make up the earth. They will learn the universe, the solar system, and the planets. They will learn day and night, the days of the week, months of the year, and the changing seasons.

We also have scientific experiments that are conducted at circle time, for example, the study of buoyancy with things that float and things that sink or, the study of magnets with things that attract and things that repel.

Extracurricular Activities

The importance of art in the Montessori curriculum is to develop the hand as the “prehensile organ of the mind” (Dr. Maria Montessori). Practical Life within a Montessori curriculum is naturally artistic, for example, cutting, weaving, sewing, use of stencils, etc. These tactile tools help with the child’s hand-eye coordination that develops skills not only in art but, also in writing. We incorporate painting and seasonal art projects as mediums of free expression of one’s self.

Occasional field trips expose the child to new and exciting natural scenery, environments, community, and culture, just as the classroom activities are designed to lead them into further interaction in the world around them.

What our clients say

Ms. Lucille is an amazing teacher. She is patient and affectionate yet firm enough to get my 3yo son to pay attention! My son has really developed a love of spelling, and his social skills and vocabulary have quickly improved since going here. The environment is relaxing and calm making it easy to focus. It's obvious that the kids get a lot of one-on-one attention. I also love the crafts he proudly brings home. Thank you Ms. Lucille!

-Aurora D., San Bruno, CA

My son was younger than two and a half when he began attending Crestmoor, and is almost three now. I did a lot of research before choosing this particular place (17 visits to family care and childcare centers), and feel comfortable leaving him when I drop him off. He had never stayed with anyone before, so I was concerned about how he would adapt, but within a week he was totally comfortable with my leaving him.

He is stimulated by the interaction with other children, by the Montessori materials, and is learning at his own pace---a hallmark of Montessori. The environment has both the warmth of a home environment, and the structure of a classroom.

Some of the other home child cares I visited were absolutely chaotic, or pushing kids to learn things they were not developmentally prepared to do. The more structured childcare centers generally had many more kids, so they seemed to lack the personal touch.

Ms. Lucille is careful to reinforce the same behaviors parents expect at home, making it easier to retain consistency.

-J.C., South San Francisco, CA

My daughter attended here for a couple of months and she loved it. I like that it is a classroom environment, and that the children get to learn as well as play and sing. Ms Lucille is great with kids too, she is VERY patient but firm. I highly recommend this place if you are looking for good quality day care.

OUR GOAL

In the Montessori prepared classroom, the child moves freely in direct contact with their environment to choose work on their own. By means of all the senses and through movement, the child literally absorbs what is in their environment to promote self-confidence and independence, which garners the desire to learn. Having a sense of order and academic growth will empower them a sense of awareness to make their own decisions while independently exploring the world.

Crestmoor Montessori Care is a safe and nurturing home away from home for emotional and social growth. The Montessori curriculum aims to groom a curious and eager to learn child by educating and stimulating a part of the child's brain which creates pathways to learning not generally taught with traditional early childhood instruction. The child will learn to respect themselves and others in the classroom and on the playground. Our goal is to teach them to have fun, to be independence, how to read and write, and instill self-awareness to be academically ready to face challenges ahead but, most importantly, to grow to be a good person.
